Dublin: A bunch of social welfare recipients are in for a treat with early payments coming their way. This is all thanks to the upcoming February bank holiday.

So, here’s the scoop: banks and post offices will be closed on Monday, February 3. Because of that, payments that usually drop on Mondays will arrive a bit earlier. If you’re getting Child Benefit, which usually comes on Tuesdays, you’re in luck too!

Mark your calendars! Payments will hit accounts on either Friday, January 31, or Saturday, February 1. Payments that are usually sent out later in the week will still go out as planned.

This year is special since it’s the third time we’re celebrating St Brigid’s Day as a bank holiday. It’s a big deal because it’s the first Irish bank holiday named after a woman, honoring one of our three patron saints.

And just so you know, February is also when the new grant for parents kicks in. The Department of Social Protection announced a New Baby Grant of €280, which is a nice bonus on top of the first month of Child Benefit.

This grant is for kids born or adopted on or after December 1, 2024. So, if you’re a new parent, you’ll get a total of €420 when you combine this grant with the first Child Benefit payment.

New parents will get a form to register for Child Benefit right after they register their baby’s birth. If you already have kids and are adding a new one, don’t worry! Your new baby will automatically be added to your existing claim.
