Plans for a housing development in Chilcompton could bring 66 new homes and improvements to local infrastructure
Chilcompton: A small village near Midsomer Norton is looking at a big change. There are plans for a new housing development that could add 66 homes. Redrow Homes is behind this project, and they want to build on the B3139 Broadway, close to the Gurney Slade quarry.
The developer has promised to fix up two crossings in the village that locals say have been ignored by the council. People are eager to see what happens, as a decision is expected soon.
The new homes would be on the southern side of Broadway, wrapping around another small development of six homes that was proposed last year. They plan to create a new entrance and improve existing crossings to make things safer.
Out of the 66 homes, 20 will be affordable, which meets the local council’s goal for new developments. Plus, there will be a new play area for kids, a community orchard, and allotments for residents to enjoy.
A spokesperson for Thrive Architects, who are working with Redrow, said this development aims to be high-quality and sustainable. They want to create a nice living space with plenty of green areas.
They also mentioned that planting new trees and improving drainage could help the local environment. Redrow is already working on another site nearby and is set to help with more homes in the area.
However, some locals, like Ian Hartley, are worried. He feels the village’s roads are already in bad shape and adding more houses will only make things worse. He pointed out that the village school is full, public transport isn’t great, and the infrastructure is struggling.
Chilcompton has fought off other housing plans in the past, so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. The council is expected to make a decision by early summer.
