Residents in Leicestershire are frustrated as the council refuses to empty frozen bins, sparking a debate on collection practices.
Leicestershire: Residents are pretty upset with Harborough District Council’s recent announcement. They said they won’t empty bins that are frozen shut. With the cold snap last weekend, many folks were left with full bins sitting on the curb.
The council warned that if the contents of the bins are frozen solid, collection crews won’t be able to empty them. This was a shift from an earlier message where they told people to leave their bins out for later collection if they couldn’t finish their rounds.
In their post, they mentioned that some household bins might freeze due to the chilly weather. Unfortunately, if your bin is frozen solid, they won’t be able to come back to empty it. That’s a bummer!
As you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with residents. Many took to social media to express their frustration, questioning why they should pay council tax if their bins aren’t being emptied. One resident pointed out, “They should definitely come back and do them later; that’s what we pay for!”
Others chimed in about the timing of collections. One person asked, “What do they expect? They tell you to put your bin out by 7 am but don’t empty it until 4:30 pm. Are we supposed to wrap our bins in electric blankets?”
Some folks even compared the current collection practices to how things used to be. One resident claimed, “They only take half the rubbish anyway,” adding that rubbish is left all over the road. They reminisced about the good old days when binmen would lift the bins and empty everything without making a mess.
We’ve reached out to Harborough District Council for their take on this situation.
