A Peterborough shop lost its licence after authorities seized illegal cigarettes and drugs
Peterborough: A shop’s licence was revoked after a big bust. The International Food Centre on Lincoln Road was searched in November. Officers found 683,400 illegal cigarettes, 37.45kg of hand-rolling tobacco, and 35 cigars.
They also discovered £14,886.20 in cash and foreign currency. A large amount of sildenafil tablets, known as Viagra, was also seized. This drug requires a prescription.
A man in his 30s was arrested for tax evasion and money laundering. He was released on bail until February. Another man in his 40s was arrested for possession with intent to supply Viagra, also released on bail.
On January 24, Peterborough City Council’s licensing sub-committee reviewed the shop’s licence. The licence holder, Marius Maculevics, did not attend the meeting.
A report showed that about £386,188 in tobacco duty was unpaid. It also mentioned illegal workers and underage sales at the shop.
The committee doubted Maculevics’ authority over the business. They believed Saade Jalal Jabar was actually in charge and lived above the shop.
Chair Councillor Chris Wiggin stated the shop was involved in serious criminal activity. This posed a threat to public safety.
The committee noted that the shop failed to follow CCTV rules and had significant unpaid tobacco duty. They felt the shop’s licence should be revoked.
They decided to revoke the licence entirely. Anyone who disagrees can appeal to Peterborough Magistrates Court within 21 days.
