A runaway truck crashed into Shine Hair and Beauty in Ilfracombe, causing significant damage and prompting calls for safety measures.
Ilfracombe: A runaway council truck crashed into Shine Hair and Beauty. The salon’s owners say it could have been deadly. They want Devon County Council to install bollards outside to prevent future accidents.
The incident shocked the North Devon town. Shine’s owner, Rebecca Hoyles, received overwhelming support from customers and local businesses.
On Friday morning, around 6:30 am, a council flatbed truck lost control. It rolled down Meridian Place, crossed the High Street, and smashed through the salon’s window. Thankfully, no one was inside.
Adrian Startup, Rebecca’s partner, said the truck wrecked the salon. It destroyed the reception desk and several chairs. He noted that if it had happened when the salon was open, people could have been seriously hurt.
Adrian mentioned a video showing the truck narrowly missing a pedestrian. The steep hill of Meridian Place poses a risk, and he believes the truck was going fast.
After the crash, council staff and police arrived quickly. The truck was removed, and the salon was boarded up for safety assessments. Rebecca aims to reopen as soon as possible, grateful for the community’s support.
However, they want immediate action to protect their shop. Adrian recalled a previous incident where a truck crashed into a nearby restaurant, leading to the installation of bollards there.
He urged Devon County Council to install bollards in front of their salon urgently. The steep hill and busy traffic make it essential for safety.
Despite the challenges, the couple is working hard to reopen. They appreciate the incredible community spirit, with many offering help and support. Local coffee shops even provided drinks for everyone.
