Bristol Airport faces major disruptions with flights suspended due to heavy snowfall affecting travel plans.
Bristol: It’s been a rough day at Bristol Airport. On Saturday, January 4, they had to suspend all flight operations because of the snow. By 9 PM, 19 flights were either delayed or diverted, with some even cancelled. Can you believe it? A flight from Geneva had to go all the way to Manchester instead!
Before they decided to stop everything, around 18 flights were already affected. This airport is a big deal for many travelers from Wales, and they had warned that the snow could cause delays. According to FlightRadar, at least nine flights that were supposed to land there had to be rerouted.
A spokesperson for the airport mentioned they’re working hard to clear the snow. They told BristolLive that the team is doing their best, but the weather is making it tough. They advised anyone worried about their flights to get in touch with their airline for updates.
Flights from places like Grenbole-Isere, Geneva, and Lanzarote were all impacted. Some were cancelled, while others were sent to Birmingham or Cardiff instead. EasyJet had to cancel their Paris flight that was supposed to arrive at 9:15 PM, and the same goes for another flight from Geneva.
Several planes were diverted to Birmingham International, including a Jet2.com flight from Lanzarote. Departures weren’t looking good either, with EasyJet’s service to Paris at 6:05 PM getting cancelled and Ryanair’s flights to Copenhagen and Prague facing delays.
As of Saturday evening, there are three weather warnings in place for Wales, with the most serious being an amber warning for snow and ice. The forecast says snow will move north overnight, turning to rain in the south by dawn, but freezing rain could create icy conditions.
In northern England, they’re expecting up to 30-40 cm of snow. The Met Office has warned that after a cold night, a low-pressure system will bring rain to the southwest, which will turn into snow as it hits the cold air. It’s going to be a wild night!
They also mentioned that snow will keep piling up into Sunday, especially in northern England, where significant accumulations could happen. As the snow changes to rain further south, there’s a risk of freezing rain, which can be really dangerous.
