Scarlets’ young talent Macs Page makes his European debut against Gloucester, with Wales selectors keenly observing for Six Nations potential
Gloucester: The Scarlets are giving a big chance to young Macs Page, who’s starting his first European match against Gloucester at Kingsholm. It’s a huge moment for the teen, and everyone’s excited to see how he performs.
Coach Dwayne Peel has been careful with Page, but he’s shown some real talent this season. Friday night will be a real test, especially since Gloucester just had a smashing win against Sale Sharks.
This Challenge Cup game is crucial for the Six Nations selection, with the Wales coaching team watching closely. They’ll be checking out how Gloucester’s Welsh players do, too.
It’s not just about Page, though. Other Scarlets players are also looking to impress. Ellis Mee has been doing well and could make the squad if he plays strong. Ioan Lloyd and Blair Murray are also in the mix.
Page will team up with Eddie James in a young midfield, while Joe Roberts is on the bench instead of the injured Johnny Williams. Another interesting pick is Archie Hughes, who’s starting for the first time this season.
Hughes is seen as a rising star, and he’ll be paired with Sam Costelow at half-back. The average age of the Scarlets’ backline is under 22, with Costelow being the oldest at 24.
In the forwards, Kemsley Mathias is back in the loose-head position, joining Marnus van der Merwe and Henry Thomas. Former Gloucester lock Alex Craig will partner Max Douglas in the second row, while Vaea Fifita returns to No. 8.
Peel is excited about the European competition, saying Kingsholm is a fantastic place to play. The atmosphere is always electric, and the younger players will gain valuable experience.
He knows it’ll be a tough match, especially since Gloucester has been strong lately. The Scarlets are currently third in their pool, and a win would really boost their chances for the knockout stages.
Peel emphasized the importance of picking up points, especially away from home, as they aim for success in Europe.
