Saltburn Pier will close for essential repairs after inspections found decking boards needing replacement to ensure visitor safety
Saltburn: So, here’s the scoop. Saltburn Pier is shutting down for a bit. They found some decking boards that really need to be replaced during routine checks.
They’re looking at swapping out over a hundred boards on this historic pier. Plus, they’ll be getting rid of some old lighting and cables hanging underneath. The council’s report says it’ll cost around £22,000, but not doing this could make things worse and put visitors at risk.
The council’s team will handle the board replacements, but they’ll also need some pros to help with the tricky bits underneath. The new boards are supposed to be eco-friendly and made from tough tropical hardwood.
A council spokesperson mentioned that they’re aiming to start the repairs next month, but it all depends on the weather. They’re hoping to keep the pier closed for as little time as possible and might allow some access when it’s safe.
They expect the work to take about three weeks, weather permitting. This pier is a big deal; it turned 150 in 2019 and has survived some wild storms over the years. It’s the only pleasure pier left on the North-East coast, so they want to keep it in good shape.
There’s also a separate £600,000 project happening to spruce up the foreshore at Saltburn. This includes fixing railings and updating street furniture. They’re even planning to change some bus stops and crossings to make things safer for everyone.
