Exciting plans are underway in Salford to create thousands of jobs and invest millions into the local economy, benefiting the community.
Salford: Big changes are coming! The city is gearing up for a major boost with plans to create over 5,000 new jobs and inject millions into the local economy.
There’s talk of a new mayoral development zone, which is a collaboration between Salford council, Trafford council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. They’re focusing on the western part of the region, known as the western gateway.
This initiative is expected to bring significant benefits to Salford. The council believes it could lead to a £6.4 million cash boost through business rates, which is fantastic news.
They’re planning to develop around 511,000 square meters of new employment space, including land at the Salford Community Stadium in Eccles, right by the M60.
On a related note, Trafford council is also exploring plans for a development corporation in Old Trafford and Trafford Wharfside, which might even involve rebuilding Manchester United’s stadium in the future.
A big part of this western gateway plan is utilizing Port Salford, a huge distribution hub that can be accessed by ship, road, and rail. There’s potential for five million square feet of logistics space there!
However, Salford council mentioned that they’ll need to invest significantly in highway and rail infrastructure to make all this happen.
This could mean new roads to Port Salford and Trafford Waters, better rail capacity, and improved transport links to Eccles town center, along with some changes to the wider road network.
The town hall is optimistic that by setting up this new development zone with Trafford council and the GMCA, they can coordinate the necessary investment and planning. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham will oversee the progress.
Salford council’s cabinet is expected to back this initiative at their next meeting on Tuesday, January 28. They’ve been contacted for further comments.
