Selkirk: So, it turns out Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland rugby captain, has been sentenced for some pretty serious stuff. He admitted to abusing his estranged wife, Gillian, over five long years. It’s a real shocker, right?
He showed up at Selkirk Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to domestic abuse. The court heard he was pretty controlling, tracking her movements and sending her distressing messages. Not cool at all.
The sheriff gave him a community payback order, which means he’ll be under supervision for a year. Plus, he’s got a five-year non-harassment order hanging over him. That’s a big deal.
Hogg had already been banned from contacting Gillian after he broke bail conditions by bombarding her with texts. Can you imagine getting 28 messages in one night? That’s just too much.
He was supposed to go to trial last month but decided to plead guilty instead. The court heard that his behavior really took a turn for the worse after they moved to Exeter in 2019. He was out partying and getting aggressive when she didn’t join in.
Things escalated to the point where Gillian sought help from a domestic abuse service. In September 2023, Hogg sent so many messages that it caused her to panic. That’s just heartbreaking.
He was arrested last year after a loud altercation, and the police had to step in. Hogg, who was once celebrated in rugby, has now found himself in a really tough spot. It’s a sad end to a once-glorious career.
