Rogue pigs are wreaking havoc in Garvestone, damaging gardens and frustrating locals
Garvestone: The village is facing a pig problem. Unruly pigs keep escaping from a nearby farm. They raid gardens, turning lawns into muddy messes. The damage is costing residents thousands of pounds.
Colin Williams lives at Crossing Keeper’s Cottage. He’s fed up with the pigs. After months of trouble, he installed CCTV to catch them in action. They’ve already caused over £1,000 in damage to his lawn.
Colin said, “We came here to live in this lovely village, but now the grass is ruined.” He reported the pigs to the police and other agencies, but they say it’s a civil matter.
His neighbor, Lorraine Williams, is also struggling with the pigs. She feels let down by the system. “I’m looking to speak with Citizens Advice about what we can do,” she said.
Her husband, Phil, is frustrated too. “It’s a lot of money to fix this,” he added. The villagers hope for a solution before their gardens are ruined for good.
Gary Law, another local, expressed his concerns. “What’s the point of fixing it if they’ll just come back?” he asked. Many believe the farmer, Trevor Armiger, should be responsible for the damage.
However, Mr. Armiger claims someone is sabotaging his fences. He has about 100 pigs and insists he’s not letting them out. He has CCTV evidence of vandalism and believes it’s criminal mischief.
“We bring them back as soon as we know they’re out,” he said. His wife, Danielle, added, “Trevor has kept pigs here for over 40 years. Someone has been letting them out since August.”
Norfolk police commented on the situation. They received a report of criminal damage on January 5. They said all lines of inquiry have been exhausted, and the case is closed.
A spokesperson from Breckland Council said they are aware of the issue and are investigating. They cannot discuss the matter further while investigations are ongoing.
