London: The New Year’s Day Parade kicked off with a bang, literally! A loud explosion of confetti and cheers marked the start, even as rain poured down.

As the parade was delayed by half an hour, umbrellas popped up everywhere. The crowd braved the chilly weather, strong winds, and grey skies, all while enjoying the lively performances from bagpipers and brass bands.

Despite the rain, a guitar band played the Beatles’ classic “Yellow Submarine,” adding to the festive vibe. DJs in plastic raincoats blasted upbeat calypso tunes from an open-top bus, and cheerleaders put on a spirited show.

Over 10,000 performers from around the world joined in, according to parade spokesman Dan Kirkby. He mentioned that safety was the priority, which is why they had to wait for the go-ahead before starting the parade.

Unfortunately, the weather meant that the inflatable cartoon characters couldn’t make an appearance this year. But the spirit of the event remained strong.

London was under a yellow wind warning, with the Met Office predicting heavy rain and gusty conditions. But that didn’t stop the fun!

Byron Villis, a 16-year-old visiting from Bristol, said he was enjoying the atmosphere. His mom, Nina, felt it was important to support the performers despite the rain.

Gary Harris, a 55-year-old from Croydon, echoed that sentiment, saying he came to show support for the parade, rain or shine. He’s been attending for three years and wouldn’t miss it.

Helene Dahlin and Emma Jorgensen, two visitors from Denmark, were excited to experience the parade. They noted how different it was from celebrations back home, where people would typically be nursing hangovers.

Even with the wet weather, they felt the energy was fantastic, proving that the spirit of the New Year is alive and well in London!
