Repton Bridge stays shut due to flooding, leaving police baffled by reckless drivers
Repton: A popular bridge in Derbyshire is still closed today after some serious flooding. Repton Bridge, which links Repton and Willington, was shut down yesterday because the water made it unsafe for cars and pedestrians.
Even though the floodwaters are going down, the folks at Derbyshire County Council are still worried about the bridge’s safety. The police have been reminding everyone to pay attention to the road closure signs.
One police spokesperson shared on Facebook that they were pretty shocked to see some people tossing the road closure signs aside. This led to some drivers unknowingly heading into fast-moving floodwaters, which is super dangerous.
In their update, the police mentioned that while the water levels are dropping, there are still concerns about the bridge’s structure, hidden hazards like black ice, and other dangers in the floodwaters.
They think the bridge will likely stay closed throughout today, January 8, 2025, but they’ll reassess the situation later. It’s been a bit tense, too, as some people have been taking out their frustrations on the officers at the scene.
Willington Parish Council has also been keeping residents in the loop about the closure. They noted that while river levels are falling, there are still worries about damage to the bridge and road from the flooding.
So, the bridge will stay closed until the council’s Highways team can check it out and confirm it’s safe for everyone to use again.
