Over 2,500 swimmers took the plunge in Saundersfoot, celebrating the New Year with a splash and raising funds for local charities
Saundersfoot: A record-breaking number of swimmers hit the chilly waters for the New Year’s Day Swim. It was quite the sight with 2,535 brave souls taking the plunge on January 1.
The beach was packed with spectators cheering everyone on. Many swimmers got into the spirit by dressing up in wild costumes like the Grinch, ducks, and even traffic cones!
There was a group that dressed as Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, and they snagged the group fancy dress prize. Laura Owens from Australia won the individual award for her adorable bumble bee outfit.
Entertainment was in full swing with performances from Sam Hughes, Jo, and dancers from Escape Youth Musical Theatre. The excitement built up as the countdown began for the 39th annual swim.
Cath Pendleton, known as the Merthyr Mermaid, kicked things off with a firework launch at 12:30 PM. She’s a local hero, having recently swum a mile in the Arctic to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Hospital.
Chris Williams, the chairman of Saundersfoot Festivities, expressed pride in the community’s support. He noted how the event has grown over the years, raising thousands for charity.
Despite the dreary weather, the turnout was fantastic, with locals and visitors alike showing up to support the swim. It’s clear that the village is passionate about this event.
Participants received medals from the Walking Saundersfoot football team and members of the community council. Plus, there was a special event at the Regency Hall featuring local performers like Côr y Môr and Buffalo Smoke.
