A pizzeria in Middlesbrough was found infested with rats and dirt, leading to immediate closure and serious health concerns for customers
When the hygiene inspectors showed up, they discovered an open tray of rat poison just sitting on the floor. Yikes! The place was covered in dirt, grease, and food that looked like it should’ve been thrown out ages ago. It was so bad that it was deemed unfit for human consumption.
The inspectors didn’t stop there. They found dirt everywhere—on cooking surfaces, walls, and even in the fridge. It was a real health hazard. The owner, Tariq Nazir, was told to shut it down immediately. When they checked back later, things hadn’t improved much.
Nazir, who’s 56, admitted to five food hygiene offenses. Apparently, there had been issues dating back to 2018, and he even had a previous conviction from 2008. His lawyer said he was trying to fix things but just fell short.
The judge was pretty stern, saying Nazir had a responsibility to keep the place safe. Thankfully, no customers got sick, but the risks were serious. Nazir got a suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban from managing any food business.
Middlesbrough Council’s Councillor Janet Thompson emphasized that food safety is crucial for the town’s economy. Most businesses take it seriously, but in cases like this, they have to act fast to protect public health. It’s a reminder that cleanliness in food places is no joke!
