Newcastle: A serious weather alert has led to a ‘do not travel’ warning for rail passengers. High winds are expected across the UK, especially in the North East.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert for wind, predicting gusts up to 90mph. This warning is in effect from 6am to 9pm on Friday, January 24.

LNER has announced that no trains will run north of Newcastle starting at 11:00 on that day. They’re working on updating their timetable, but for now, it’s best to avoid those routes.

If you’re planning to travel north of York, be prepared for possible cancellations and delays. The weather is making alternative travel options pretty limited.

Lumo passengers are also being told to steer clear of travel north of Newcastle. They’ve even said you can use your tickets on other days without any extra fees.

Just a heads up, Lumo services will be busy on those days, so be ready to stand for part of your journey. They can’t guarantee seat reservations, but they’ve added some unreserved seating.

If you decide not to travel, you can get a refund from your ticket retailer.

TransPennine Express is also advising against travel on certain routes, including those between Manchester/Liverpool and Glasgow/Edinburgh.
