Gwynedd: A charming pub called Glan yr Afon is making waves. It was saved by the community with help from Hollywood star Matthew Rhys. Now, it’s planning to open a small shop soon.

The pub, also known as the Riverside, was bought by locals two years ago. They raised over £250,000 to buy it after the previous owner left. The community wanted to keep this beloved spot alive.

Matthew Rhys, who has ties to the area, supported the buyout. He spent many happy days at the pub during his youth. The pub reopened in February 2023, run by a Community Benefits Society.

They’ve also started offering stylish accommodations upstairs. Six unused bedrooms were converted, and bookings began in November. The pub is now a popular spot for anglers and tradespeople.

Meirion Roberts, a founding member of the initiative, shared that they’re fully booked with country sportspeople tonight. They’re also looking to attract walkers from the Wales Coast Path.

The new shop, Siop y Glan, will serve the village’s 400 residents. It’s a short drive to Machynlleth, so this shop will be a great local option. It aims to support local businesses and help those who don’t drive.

Pennal has a rich history, linked to Welsh figures like Llywelyn Fawr and Owain Glyndŵr. This history helped with fundraising, attracting shareholders from around the world.

The pub is now nominated for the 2025 Countryside Alliance awards, known as the “Rural Oscars.” It’s shortlisted for the pub of the year category for Wales.

Guests love the upgrades, especially the comfy rooms and local products. The community is proud of their hard work to keep the pub alive.

Winning the award would mean a lot to this small community. They’ve worked hard to make the pub a social hub and attract visitors.

Local competition is tough, with other pubs also nominated. The public can vote until February 22, and winners will be announced in April.

Rachel Evans from Countryside Alliance Wales praised the nominations. Many businesses have important stories to tell, and it’s vital they get recognized.
