Caerphilly’s Stockland and Windsor Squares will be redeveloped, enhancing public art and creating vibrant social spaces for the community
Caerphilly: Exciting changes are coming to two town squares! Stockland Square and Windsor Square are getting a makeover as part of the Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan.
These squares, built back in the late 90s, will be transformed into lively social spaces. Think more greenery, comfy seating, and better bins for local businesses. Sounds nice, right?
The Welsh Government is chipping in with up to £500,000 from their Transforming Towns fund, plus some help from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It’s all about making Caerphilly a modern, bustling town for everyone.
And here’s the best part: the beloved public art installations will be preserved! The ‘Jackdaws of Caerphilly’ and ‘Gossiping Geese’ sculptures by artist Julie Westerman will stay put, becoming highlights in the revamped squares.
Julie shared her joy, saying it’s amazing to see her sculptures still in great shape after all these years. She hopes people will continue to enjoy them and get up close in their new spots.
These sculptures were designed to bring a sense of calm and beauty to the town center. The jackdaws were inspired by a nickname for Caerphilly’s residents, while the goose on the flagpole encourages folks to look up and dream big.
Councillor James Pritchard, the deputy leader of Caerphilly Borough Council, is thrilled about the regeneration. He believes these squares will become vibrant social hubs, enhancing the area’s charm and complementing the nearby Ffos Caerffili development.
There’s even more exciting stuff in the works under the Caerphilly Town 2035 plan, including improvements to Pentrebane Street and Caerphilly Castle. Keep an eye out for updates on road closures from the council’s website and social media!
