Councillors have decided to keep Tref-Y-Rhyg Primary School open, prioritizing the needs of current and future students over proposed closures.
Tonyrefail: So, guess what? Tref-Y-Rhyg Primary School is staying open! The council decided not to close it, which is a huge relief for everyone involved.
They were thinking about shutting it down and moving the kids to Tonyrefail Community School by 2025. But after hearing from parents and teachers, they changed their minds.
Councillor Rhys Lewis, who’s in charge of education, said it just wouldn’t be right for the kids. He felt there was a strong case for keeping the school open, especially with all the changes happening in the area.
Another councillor, Dan Owen-Jones, pointed out that the population is growing fast in Tonyrefail. He mentioned that the school is needed now more than ever, with the number of students expected to triple soon.
It’s been a tough time for the kids, especially those who’ve faced challenges in their lives. The last thing they need is more uncertainty about their school.
He urged the council to let the school thrive instead of dragging it through more discussions. With new houses popping up nearby, more kids will be joining the school community soon.
Steve Burgess, the chair of governors, also chimed in, saying they’ve already done a lot to modernize the school. He emphasized that the kids’ happiness and safety should come first.
In a recent consultation, most people were against the closure. Out of 98 responses, only 7 supported the idea. The council had claimed they wanted to improve education, but it seems the community disagrees.
In the end, it’s all about what’s best for the kids, and keeping Tref-Y-Rhyg Primary School open seems to be the right choice.
