Preston station’s toilets will close for eight weeks for a major refurbishment, with temporary facilities provided during the work
Preston: The toilets at Preston station are closing for about eight weeks. They’re getting a complete makeover, which is pretty exciting. Avanti West Coast, the train operator, is leading this project.
The work is set to kick off later this month and should wrap up by the end of March. While the main toilets are out of commission, don’t worry! They’ll have temporary toilets ready a week before the big closure.
Both the men’s and women’s restrooms, plus two accessible toilets, will be updated. Even the hallway leading to the toilets is getting a little TLC. The council gave the thumbs up for this project, saying it won’t mess with the station’s historic vibe.
Since the station is a Grade II-listed building from 1880, they needed special permission for the upgrades. Everything inside the toilets, like the sinks and cubicle dividers, will be replaced. They’re also sprucing up the walls and ceilings.
They’re even planning to slightly change the layout of the cubicles. The project, which costs around £250,000, aims to modernize the toilets and save on energy and water with new LED lights and low-water fixtures.
A report from the Preston City Council said the changes won’t harm the station’s significance since the current toilets don’t have any original features. The outside of the toilet block and the entrance doors will stay the same.
Some passengers haven’t been too happy with the current state of the toilets. A few have left reviews on Trip Advisor, calling them a “smelly disgrace” and “disgusting.”
Despite the complaints, Preston station holds a decent 3.5 out of 5 rating on Trip Advisor. So, it seems like some folks are still okay with it!
