Porthcawl plans to add 1,100 homes, leisure facilities, and retail spaces, modernizing the town while keeping its charm.
Porthcawl: A popular seaside town in the UK is about to change. They’re planning a big project to add 1,100 new homes and fun places to visit.
The Bridgend County Borough Council shared these plans before public consultations in February 2025. They want to modernize Porthcawl but keep its coastal charm intact.
The project will reshape the town with new homes, leisure spots, and upgrades. Key areas like Sandy Bay, Coney Beach, and Salt Lake will see new developments.
At Sandy Bay, they plan to build 450 homes. Coney Beach will get 200 homes, and Salt Lake will have another 450. Half of these homes will be affordable for families and first-time buyers.
Besides housing, there will be new attractions like a pump track, skate park, and mini-golf. Green spaces will also be added for everyone to enjoy.
Griffin Park will grow three times its size. It will have a climbing wall, fitness trail, and better landscaping. New shops, cafes, and restaurants will also pop up along the waterfront.
One exciting feature is the new coastal defenses at Sandy Bay. They’ll help protect against erosion and give people better beach access.
There will be seasonal event spaces and improved parking, including a possible multi-storey car park at Salt Lake. However, Coney Beach Amusement Park will close after over a century.
Councillor Neelo Farr emphasized the importance of community input in these plans. She said public consultation has been key to regenerating Porthcawl.
Residents can check out the full proposals at an exhibition on February 3, 2025, at the Hi Tide Inn. They can also view them online at porthcawlwaterfront.co.uk and give feedback until February 28, 2025.
