Donald Trump is offering buyouts to federal employees who prefer remote work
Washington, D.C.: Donald Trump is pushing to reduce the size of the US government. He’s now offering buyout packages to federal staff who don’t want to return to the office.
On Tuesday, the administration emailed millions of employees. They have until February 6 to decide if they want to leave through a “deferred resignation program.”
The email, from the Office of Personnel Management, says resigning employees will get about eight months of salary as severance.
Many federal employees still have remote work options from the pandemic. The email reassured them that if they resign, they’ll keep their pay and benefits until September 30, 2025.
The White House thinks about 10% of federal workers, around 200,000 people, might accept this offer. This could save the government up to $100 billion.
However, some workers, like military members and postal workers, aren’t included in this offer. Those interested in the buyout need to reply to the email with “resign” in the subject line.
Employees who choose to stay were warned about possible future downsizing. The email stated they can’t guarantee job security but promised dignity if positions are eliminated.
Trump signed a memo right after taking office, requiring federal workers to return to the office five days a week, with some exceptions.
Critics argue this move aims to push out long-time employees in favor of those loyal to Trump. Stephen Miller, a senior official, claimed government workers lean left and said it’s crucial for Trump to gain control.
Trump, now 78, has long promised to cut government size and reduce federal spending as he campaigns for a second term.
