Leicester police are cracking down on illegal e-bikes and e-scooters, scrapping those seized in a recent city centre operation to enhance safety
Officers are now seizing these vehicles without any warning. They’ve launched a special operation called Op Pedalfast to address the ongoing issues. Just recently, they took 28 illegal vehicles off the streets in one day.
The images from the operation show a big pile of confiscated e-scooters and e-bikes. Sergeant Zane Tompkins hopes this will send a clear message to anyone thinking about riding illegal vehicles.
When the police take an illegal e-bike or e-scooter, they scrap it right away. According to the rules, private e-scooters can only be used on private land with permission. E-bikes are illegal if they don’t meet specific regulations, like having a motor under 250 watts.
Leicester’s mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, is fully on board with this crackdown. He’s committed to using all available resources to tackle the issues caused by these vehicles in the city centre. He’s noted that fast e-bike riders can really disrupt the enjoyment of public spaces.
Many locals are happy to see the police taking action. They feel relieved and surprised that something is finally being done about the problem. It seems like a step in the right direction for a safer city centre.
