A police officer has confessed to causing the death of a moped rider during an emergency response in Essex
Enfield: A police officer has admitted to killing a moped rider while responding to an emergency call. Ian Brotherton, 32, was driving his police car at 47mph in a 30mph zone when he crashed into Cristopher De Guedes, 26.
The incident happened on October 12, 2023, around 3pm. Brotherton’s police van, lights and sirens on, ran a red light on Southbury Road and hit De Guedes as he was turning onto Baird Road. Sadly, De Guedes died the next day in the hospital.
After the crash, Brotherton was put on restricted duties while an investigation took place. The police watchdog, IOPC, brought charges against him.
Initially, Brotherton denied causing death by dangerous driving but later admitted to the lesser charge of careless driving. The prosecutor confirmed that De Guedes’ family in Brazil was consulted about the plea.
Judge Nigel Lickley KC has postponed sentencing until February 27, stating that all options, including jail time, are still on the table. Brotherton has been granted bail but is banned from driving in the meantime.
After the hearing, Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines expressed her condolences to De Guedes’ family. She emphasized that police drivers are trained to high standards and must be accountable for their actions.
Now that the criminal case is over, Brotherton will also face a misconduct hearing.
