Plymouth: Work is kicking off in the city centre as they start building a temporary road for the Armada Way revamp. It’s a big project, costing around £30 million, and shoppers should brace themselves for some noise and mess. But don’t worry, the shops will still be open.

The contractors, Morgan Sindall, are setting up this new haul road to help move materials and machinery safely. It’ll run between Mayflower Street and Place de Brest, making it easier for workers to get things done without disrupting the public too much.

They’re also taking out those old raised beds from the 1980s and leveling the surface. The council has warned that it might get a bit noisy and dirty at first, but they’re making sure the road is far enough from the shops and protected by sturdy fencing.

To keep the area clean, trucks and machinery will be hosed down before leaving the site. The work hours are set from 7 am to 6 pm, so it’s a full day of action.

This haul road is just the next step in the ambitious Armada Way project. Since it kicked off in early October 2024, they’ve been busy clearing the site near the Copthorne Hotel and Armada Centre, digging drainage trenches, and getting ready for some rain gardens. Plus, they’re shaping up a cool amphitheatre space around the Phoenix Fountain. Exciting times ahead for Plymouth!
