Chris Errington suggests it might be time for Plymouth Argyle to sell Morgan Whittaker if the right offer comes along
Plymouth: Morgan Whittaker has been a standout player for Plymouth Argyle. He’s been part of some great moments lately, but maybe it’s time for him to move on.
If he gets sold soon, it could bring in some much-needed cash for the team to grab new players before the January transfer window closes. Whittaker is talented, but one player alone can’t fix the mess Argyle is in at the bottom of the Championship.
They really need to bring in more players to boost the squad’s quality and morale, which has taken a hit during this tough stretch.
We all know how lethal Whittaker’s left foot can be, scoring crucial goals for Argyle. But teams have caught on, and it’s just not enough to turn things around right now.
They need help in defense, midfield, and attack, and they need it fast. Argyle’s budget is way smaller than most of their Championship rivals, making it tough to attract new talent.
So, selling Whittaker could provide the funds to make some deals happen. Plus, his old club, Swansea City, is due a cut from any sale, which complicates things a bit.
With the gap widening between Argyle and safety in the league, it’s going to be hard to convince players to join a team fighting relegation. That’s just the reality they’re facing.
They need strong players who are ready for a challenge, but with all the chaos at Home Park lately, it might not look as appealing to potential signings.
Also, if Whittaker stays and Argyle gets relegated, it could hurt his value in the summer. They want to be a club that develops young talent and sells them for a profit, so cashing in on Whittaker now seems smart.
Of course, there are a couple of things to consider. First, the offer has to be right for a proven player like him, who’s only 24 and under contract until 2027. Second, if a good bid comes in but it’s too late in the window for Argyle to use that money, they should turn it down.
Burnley has already made a bid for Whittaker this month, showing interest again after the summer window. But from what I hear, it didn’t meet Argyle’s asking price.
Scott Parker’s team is visiting Home Park soon, so who knows what talks might happen before or after that match about a better offer.
Regardless, Argyle needs to explore all options to strengthen their squad. If selling someone as important as Whittaker means bringing in more quality for new coach Miron Muslic, then that’s what they should do.
