Exciting news for Exeter! A new bridge is on the way to replace the old Mallison Bridge, enhancing access for pedestrians and cyclists.
Exeter: Big changes are coming to Exeter Quay! After nearly seven years without a bridge, plans for a new one are finally moving forward. The old Mallison Bridge was taken down due to safety issues, and now the Devon County Council is stepping in with a fresh proposal.
The new bridge will be a steel structure, measuring 27 meters long and 3.4 meters wide. It’s set to go where the old bridge used to be, right between the Samuel Jones pub and the Riverside Cafe. The design aims to blend in nicely with the area, making it a great addition to the Quay.
If all goes well with the planning application, construction could kick off this summer, with hopes of wrapping it up by autumn. This bridge will be for both pedestrians and cyclists, connecting the riverside path to Exeter Quay, which is super convenient.
The original Mallison Bridge was built back in 1984 but fell into disrepair by 2018. It was closed for safety reasons, and after a failed attempt to replace it in 2018 due to funding issues, it was finally removed in 2020. Since then, folks have had to take a detour through a narrow alley to get around.
In March 2024, the council secured some government funding to help make this new bridge a reality, with additional support from local councils and trusts. Before submitting the plans, they consulted with Exeter City Council and decided on a single span design to avoid complications with electrical cables under the riverbed.
The new bridge will have a curved profile, which not only looks good but also helps avoid any clashes with nearby structures. Plus, it’ll have safety barriers at both ends to keep everyone secure while crossing.
Overall, this new bridge is shaping up to be a fantastic improvement for the area, making it safer and easier for everyone to enjoy the beautiful riverside.
