Gloucester: A housing association in Gloucestershire has just snagged an 11-acre plot to build 95 new homes. This development is set to rise just outside Gloucester, with half of the homes designated as affordable housing and the other half for shared ownership.

Bromford, a housing association based in Tewkesbury, has secured this land in Highnam. There’s a real need for affordable housing in the area, and Bromford plans to offer 47 homes for affordable rent and 48 for shared ownership.

The purchase was finalized after the previous owners got the green light from the Planning Inspectorate in December 2023 to build on the site. Bromford’s construction team is eager to kick off work on these new homes in early 2026.

They’re already busy building homes in Cheltenham, Stroud, and Winchcombe, and they recently acquired land for nearly 400 new homes in Matson and Cheltenham.

Right now, Bromford is working on detailed plans for the site, which they hope to submit to Tewkesbury Borough Council in early 2025. The plans will include a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, along with a play area and green spaces.

Bromford’s Head of Land, Adam Frontczak, mentioned that securing this land is a big step towards increasing affordable housing in Gloucestershire. They’re aiming for a 100% affordable housing development, with options for both rent and low-cost ownership.

He highlighted the pressing need for quality, affordable housing, noting that many families are on local authority waiting lists. Bromford is committed to boosting this supply by acquiring land and building energy-efficient homes that will benefit local families for years to come.

As one of the largest housing associations in the UK, Bromford manages 47,000 homes across the West Midlands and West of England, with over 12,000 in Gloucestershire alone. Last year, they completed 1,191 new homes, including 551 for social rent, making them the top builder among housing associations in the country.

In July 2024, they announced plans to merge with Norwich-based Flagship, which would create a housing association with 84,000 homes.
