Experts are assessing the sinkhole at Eston Recreation Ground while plans for a permanent fence are underway to ensure public safety
Eston: A sinkhole has opened up in a playing field, and authorities are on it. They’re working with experts, including geologists, to figure out what caused it.
Redcar and Cleveland Council is trying to secure the site, but anti-social behavior has made things tricky. They’re asking folks to stay away for their safety. Plans for a permanent fence are in the works.
This sinkhole showed up in Eston Rec late last year. A local grandmother, Carol Carne, had a scary experience when she fell in while trying to rescue her dog. She was pulled out by some good Samaritans who heard her screams.
The hole is about 12 feet deep, which is pretty alarming. The council has been keeping the public updated, urging everyone to avoid the area until they can make it safe again.
They believe the sinkhole might be linked to an old borehole from mining activities. A full survey is planned to get to the bottom of it.
Unfortunately, previous safety measures like barriers were removed by unknown individuals, so a more robust fence is needed to keep people safe. This new fence will cover the sinkhole and some extra space around it, just in case there’s more subsidence.
Regular checks will be done to keep the area secure, and they’re reminding dog owners to keep their pets on leads if they’re nearby.
