Cwmbran: So, there’s some big news about Grange Hospital. They’re planning to put up a temporary building in the car park. This is all about freeing up some much-needed beds.

The health board is looking to get this done pretty quickly. They want to have it ready by early 2025. They’ve already set aside a good chunk of money for it, around £848,000, but they just submitted the planning application recently.

This new unit will have 12 beds and a bunch of chairs, plus a treatment room and other facilities. It’s meant to help ease the pressure on the hospital, which has been super busy lately.

Last week, the Welsh Ambulance Service even declared a critical incident because they were struggling to respond to emergency calls. There were reports of ambulances waiting outside the hospital, which is never a good sign.

The hospital opened back in 2020, but it’s been adapting to handle more patients. The current discharge lounge is just too small for the number of patients they’re dealing with. They’re discharging about 50 patients a day, and that’s causing a backlog.

In September, they decided to hire six new consultants to help manage the flow better. The new building will go up in a spot that used to have another temporary structure, so it shouldn’t disrupt things too much.

They’ve got architects from Leeds working on the plans, and they’re confident it’ll be a good fit. It’s all about making sure the hospital can keep up with the demand and provide the best care possible.
