Join the Pembrokeshire History Society for coffee and a talk on Carew Castle, featuring its rich Tudor history and exciting events.
Pembrokeshire: There’s a cozy coffee morning happening soon! The Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society is putting it together, and it’s all about Carew Castle.
This event is set for Saturday, January 11, at Pembroke Town Hall. Doors swing open at 10am, so you can grab a coffee and check out the museum and council chamber on the first floor.
Good news for everyone—there’s lift access for those who need it. Then, at 11am, the real fun begins in the George Lewis Hall with a talk focused on Carew Castle.
Did you know that Carew Castle was home to Sir Rhys ap Thomas? He’s a pretty big deal in Tudor history, famously known for taking down King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth.
That victory led to Henry Tudor becoming King Henry VII. Sir Rhys was knighted for his efforts and became the governor of South Wales, staying close to King Henry throughout his life.
In fact, he was made a Knight of the Garter in 1505! To celebrate, he threw a massive tournament at Carew Castle in April 1507, which was the last of its kind in the country.
It was a huge event, unlike anything Wales had seen before. To honor the 500th anniversary of that tournament, a re-enactment took place in 2007, complete with medieval fun, drawing in thousands of visitors.
As part of the coffee morning, they’ll even show a film of that re-enactment. And guess what? Entry to the coffee morning and talk is totally free!
Plus, if you’re up for more fun, they’re hosting a quiz night with a buffet on Friday, January 17, at 7pm in the same town hall. It’s just £5 at the door.
