Over 15,300 Welsh farmers have received significant payments, ensuring continued support for the agricultural sector amid financial challenges.
Newport: More than 15,300 farm businesses in Wales, including those in Gwent, have received a whopping £66.88 million in payments. This is on top of the £160.52 million already given as advance payments under the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS).
So, all in all, that’s a total of £227.40 million that’s been dished out. Pretty impressive, right?
Huw Irranca-Davies, the Deputy First Minister and cabinet secretary for rural affairs, emphasized how vital farmers are to communities across Wales. He mentioned that they play a key role in the economy and food production.
He also pointed out that farmers are crucial in protecting the land and tackling climate issues. It’s a tough time for everyone, but he reassured that the government is committed to supporting Welsh farmers in producing quality food sustainably.
Despite financial pressures in other areas, the BPS budget remains intact. Huw recently shared an updated outline of the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), which reflects changes made based on feedback from farmers and stakeholders.
These updates aim to meet the needs of Welsh farmers while also addressing climate change and nature commitments. Huw promised to keep listening to stakeholders as they finalize details for the SFS next year.
He also mentioned that they’ll support the sector as it transitions away from BPS starting next year. Sounds like they’re really trying to make things work for everyone involved!
