Glasgow: The city has many narrow streets, especially in the west end and south side. This is important for residents with cars now that the pavement parking ban is in place.

On January 29, I parked on Skirving Street and got a warning notice. Most vehicles in the area were parked illegally, just like mine.

Now, if you park even a little on the pavement, you could face a big fine. The ban started on Wednesday to help keep pedestrians safe, especially those with disabilities or parents with strollers.

However, many narrow streets still need assessment. The council asked drivers to check their street status earlier this month. Until this is done, some areas are exempt from the ban.

Residents have voiced their concerns. A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said drivers should check the pavement parking map. This will show where the ban is enforced and where fines can be issued.

They are also assessing other streets to see if more parking controls are needed or if exemptions are necessary. The completion date for this work is still unknown.

What to expect:

Glasgow City Council will start issuing £100 fines for vehicles parked on pavements. They may also tow your vehicle.

The warning notice states: “A nationwide ban on pavement parking started on December 11, 2023. You parked illegally, violating this law.”

“Fines of £100 will be issued for pavement parking, with possible vehicle removal.”

“Please, do not park here again.”

“New laws also make double parking and parking across dropped kerbs illegal.”

Some residents who need street parking are worried. One local with a work van said, “If cars park on the pavement, I can’t drive down my street without hitting mirrors. What are we supposed to do?”

Another resident expressed concern about emergency vehicles. They said, “Ambulances or fire crews won’t be able to enter if we can’t park on the kerb.”

According to the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, Glasgow found no exemptions for the pavement parking ban where parking restrictions exist or where roads are at least 7.5 meters wide. This width allows fire engines to pass safely.

All parking fines in Glasgow, including those for pavement parking, double parking, and dropped kerb violations, will be £100. If paid within fourteen days, the fine is reduced to £50.
