A patient at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd assaulted four staff members, claiming to have hepatitis and attempting to smear a nurse with his blood
Bodelwyddan: So, there was this wild incident at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. A patient named Jamie McAdam went off the rails and tried to smear a nurse with his blood. Can you believe that?
This guy, 36 years old, was already in a bad spot. He admitted to assaulting four emergency workers. The judge at Caernarfon Crown Court gave him a 14-month sentence for each assault, but three of them will run at the same time.
McAdam had been admitted to the hospital after taking some suspected opioids. Things took a turn when he started hurling insults at the staff. He was spitting and biting, which is just awful.
When they tried to put a cannula in his arm, he yanked it out, and there was blood everywhere. He even claimed he had hepatitis, which is super serious. Later, he knocked a urine pot out of a medic’s hand and might have bitten her too.
A porter tried to help, but McAdam lashed out and spat at him. Then a security guard stepped in, and McAdam tried to bite him as well. It was chaos!
Eventually, they had to sedate him, but he was still being racially abusive to two doctors. Even when they took him for a CT scan, he lashed out again. He was just being difficult, going limp so they couldn’t put him in a wheelchair.
When the police arrived, he didn’t say much. His lawyer said his behavior was “abhorrent and appalling.” McAdam claims he’s ashamed and wants to apologize, saying he had a rough start in life and turned to alcohol and drugs.
He’s apparently more stable now, and probation officers are willing to help him. But the judge, Her Honour Nicola Jones, said the assaults were too serious, especially in a hospital setting, so he had to go to prison.
