The proposed demolition of a beloved Paignton pub for a car park sparks local outrage and debate about the town’s future
Paignton: There’s a lot of chatter about the Inn on The Green, a popular pub right by the seafront. It’s facing demolition to make room for a car park, and folks are not happy about it.
The Fragrance Group wants to replace this historic spot with parking for their new hotels. But many locals, including Torbay MP Steve Darling, are questioning if that’s really the best move for the area.
People are pretty upset about losing this iconic pub. It’s been a part of the seafront for ages, and many think it should stay. The plans have stirred up quite a bit of debate among residents.
One reader, Rickyda2002, summed it up well: “A car park on the seafront? How beautiful and crazy is that?” Others are worried about the impact on the town’s vibe.
Some comments suggest that the owners need to keep the area looking decent to avoid attracting trouble. Others think a nightclub would be a better fit than a car park.
There’s also a divide on whether the pub was even popular enough to keep open. Natalie Collins pointed out that seafront parking could be useful, especially with council plans to remove parking near the pier.
But not everyone is on board with the idea of a car park. Aston Hartless was pretty passionate, saying it would be a huge mistake to let this happen. He believes the location deserves a pub or club instead.
Some people are confused, wondering if the Inn is a listed building. Meanwhile, others are all for more parking, thinking it’s a great idea.
As Pete Godfrey put it, “Another car park and nowhere to go? This is a joke. Let’s drag Paignton down a bit more.”
So, what do you think? Should the Inn on The Green be demolished for a car park? Share your thoughts in the comments!
