Plans for 150 homes on the Cadley Hill site in Swadlincote have been approved despite local concerns about development and wildlife impact
Swadlincote: So, guess what? They just approved plans for over 100 new homes on the old Cadley Hill Colliery site. Some folks are pretty upset about it, saying the town doesn’t need more buildings. This all went down at a council meeting where the Harworth Group pitched their idea for 150 houses.
People were worried because the land is outside the settlement boundary and is a popular open space. Plus, it’s not part of the council’s original plan for the area, which already includes 600 homes. It seems like there’s a lot of back and forth about whether this is a good idea.
There were also questions about how the development would affect local schools and wildlife. In the end, the council voted seven to three in favor of the plans, even though some members were hesitant.
The new homes will be built near existing developments and will connect to walking and cycling paths. They’re trying to make it easier for people to get around, which is nice.
Initially, there was a plan for a road that would connect to another estate, but that got scrapped after people raised concerns about traffic. The developer, Harworth, claims they’ve been working with the council for years and that this site is a good fit.
They’re also promising to contribute over a million pounds to help with the impact of the new homes. Out of the 150 houses, 45 will be affordable, which is a plus for the community.
Some council members are still worried, though. They think there’s already enough land set aside for housing and are concerned about losing habitats for local birds. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, really.
In the end, it looks like the new homes are going ahead, but there’s definitely a lot of chatter about the impact on the area and the wildlife. It’s a big change for Swadlincote, that’s for sure.
