Emma Finucane, the Olympic cyclist, is celebrated among west Wales recipients in the New Year Honours List for her remarkable achievements
Carmarthen: So, guess what? Emma Finucane, the amazing cyclist, just got recognized in the New Year Honours List! She snagged a gold medal in the women’s team sprint at the Paris 2024 Olympics. How cool is that?
But wait, there’s more! She also brought home bronze medals in the individual keirin and sprint events. That makes her the first British woman in 60 years to win three medals at a single Olympics. Talk about impressive!
Because of all this, she’s been awarded an MBE for her contributions to cycling. Pretty awesome, right? And she’s not the only one getting some love. Chris Martin, from Haverfordwest, is now an OBE for his work in the maritime sector.
Then there’s Debbie Lane from Llanelli, who’s been recognized for her efforts in supporting the LGBT+ community and saving young lives. It’s great to see so many people making a difference!
Judith Harvey, managing the Brecon Beacons National Park, also got a British Empire Medal for her services. And let’s not forget Paul Lucas and David James, who both received BEMs for their work in education and charity.
On a national level, some big names like Stephen Fry and Gareth Southgate have been knighted. Plus, Team GB athletes like Keely Hodgkinson and Tom Pidcock are also being honored after their Olympic success.
Even those who fought for justice for wrongfully convicted subpostmasters are being recognized. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised all these unsung heroes for their incredible contributions to the community.
And in the world of entertainment, Jacqueline Wilson became a Dame for her literary work, while Carey Mulligan and Alan Titchmarsh received CBEs. Eddie Marsan and Myleene Klass also got their honors. What a fantastic way to start the year!
