Tragic loss of PC Rosie Prior highlights the bravery of officers even off duty
Thirsk: A heartbreaking incident unfolded when off-duty police constable Rosie Prior was tragically killed while helping at a crash scene. She was praised by senior officers for her dedication to serving the public.
Rosie was on the A19 near Bagby when she came across a road collision. While trying to assist, she and another man, Ryan Welford, were struck by a lorry. Sadly, both lost their lives at the scene.
A teenage boy, who was a passenger in Ryan’s car, was also hit and is now in serious but stable condition at the hospital. The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Chief Constable Tim Forber spoke highly of Rosie, saying she was the embodiment of British policing. He noted that she put herself in harm’s way to help others, even while off duty.
Rosie’s family described her as a loving mother and sister who will be deeply missed. The community is mourning her loss, and tributes have poured in from local leaders and the police federation.
As the investigation continues, North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward. The scene has since been cleared, but the impact of this tragedy will be felt for a long time.
