Tragic incident in North Yorkshire highlights the bravery of police officers
Thirsk: A heartbreaking incident unfolded when an off-duty policewoman, Rosie Prior, was tragically killed by a lorry while trying to help at a crash scene. She was just 45 years old and had been serving with North Yorkshire Police for over two years.
Rosie was on the A19 when she came across a road collision. She jumped in to assist, showing the kind of bravery that defines the best of British policing. Sadly, while she was helping, she and another man, Ryan Welford, were struck by a heavy goods vehicle.
Ryan, who was involved in the initial crash, also lost his life that day. A teenage boy who was in Ryan’s car was hit too and is currently in the hospital, but thankfully, he’s in stable condition.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He’s been released while the investigation continues.
Chief Constable Tim Forber spoke highly of Rosie, saying she was off duty but still chose to help others. He emphasized how she put the safety of others before her own, which is what makes her loss so tragic.
Rosie’s family described her as a loving mother and sister, and they’re heartbroken. Local officials expressed their devastation, highlighting her commitment to public service even when she wasn’t on the clock.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also shared her condolences, reminding everyone of the daily risks police officers take to keep us safe. The Police Federation echoed these sentiments, honoring Rosie’s dedication and service.
As the investigation continues, North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward. It’s a tough time for everyone involved, and the community is rallying together to support the families affected.
