Frustrated locals in Nottingham are urging action on a long-neglected building
Nottingham: Residents are really fed up with a crumbling building in their neighborhood. The old Irwin Business Centre has been sitting there, untouched, for years. Dr. Balvinder Mehat, the owner, promised to start fixing it up in 2024, but nothing has happened yet.
As we kick off 2024, the place looks worse than ever, especially after a fire last year. Built in 2008, it’s never been used, and folks in the area are tired of looking at it. Ben Clatworthy, who’s lived nearby for over eight years, thought it would be up and running by now. Instead, it’s just become an eyesore.
He pointed out how dangerous it looks, with insulation hanging out and windows missing. It’s like the building is begging for a fresh start. And he’s not alone in his frustration. Rob Pierce, a local dog walker, said it’s ridiculous that nothing has been done for so long. He thinks it could have been a nice hotel or something useful.
Rob also mentioned how kids and homeless people have been exploring the place, which is pretty concerning. Richard Wright, another resident, echoed these worries, saying it’s a safety hazard. He believes it’s time to just knock it down and start over.
People are really hoping the city council will step in. Basford councillor Salma Mumtaz is pushing for action to make the area safer and get the development moving. The council has been involved but hasn’t given a clear response yet.
Plans to turn the building into apartments were approved back in 2020, but nothing has happened since. Dr. Mehat hasn’t said much about the future of the site, leaving everyone in the dark. While he hinted at progress in early 2024, there’s still no solid plan in sight.
It’s frustrating for the community, especially since the building is right next to the tram stop. It’s the first thing people see when they arrive, and it’s not a good look. Residents just want to see some action and a fresh start for their neighborhood.
