Evangelos Marinakis can proceed with his libel claim against a rival football owner in the High Court
Nottingham: So, here’s the scoop. Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest, just got the green light to keep his libel case rolling in the High Court. This is against Irini Karipidis, who owns a rival Greek football team, Aris.
Marinakis is not too happy about some pretty serious claims thrown his way. He’s suing Karipidis over allegations that he was involved in match-fixing and even a drug trafficking case back in Greece. Yikes!
His lawyers argued that this whole thing is a “smear campaign” and that the £2.1 million claim should definitely be heard in an English court. They believe it’s worth it, especially if it helps clear his name.
On the flip side, Karipidis’ team thinks this isn’t the right place for the case and that it doesn’t really hold water. But the judge, Richard Spearman, said if Marinakis wins, he could get a good chunk of change for the damage to his reputation. Sounds like this is just getting started!
