Urban explorers have returned to Nottingham’s Debenhams building as plans for its future are set to be revealed soon
Nottingham: The old Debenhams building is back in the spotlight as urban explorers have made their way inside again. It’s been four years since the store closed its doors in May 2021, and folks are curious about what’s next for this iconic spot.
One urban explorer, known as ‘Urbex No Limits,’ first got in there back in April 2024. They shared some pretty eerie photos showing remnants of the store, like empty shelves and old payment counters. It’s like stepping back in time!
Recently, a video popped up on YouTube from J Smith Media Production, showing more explorers wandering through the building. They captured the same old items still hanging around, which is kind of wild.
The explorers checked out the canteen, kitchens, and shop floor. Longmead Capital, the company in talks with the city council about the building’s future, said they’re keeping it safe and secure. But they didn’t want to comment on the latest visits.
Longmead Capital has been managing the site since it was bought by Long Row Properties Limited in 2017. They were hoping to keep getting income from Debenhams, but things have changed since then.
Neghat Khan, the leader of Nottingham City Council, mentioned that plans for the building are ready to roll out. A public consultation is expected to kick off early in 2025. She noted that the building isn’t in great shape, and there’s a lot of work to be done.
During her visit, she saw the damage and the challenges ahead for redevelopment. It’s a tough job, especially with some parts of the building being listed. Nottinghamshire Live has also advised against others trying to explore these sites, as it can be risky.
