Northumbrian Water is investing £11.2m to build a new sewer pipeline under a historic railway line, enhancing the wastewater network.
Darlington: Northumbrian Water is kicking off a big project to build a new sewer pipeline. This £11.2 million scheme aims to upgrade the wastewater network in the area.
The new pipeline will stretch about 9 kilometers and will run beneath the historic Stockton & Darlington Railway. This railway is now part of the train line connecting Bishop Auckland and Saltburn. Engineers are drilling 200 meters underground, which means they can install the sewer without messing with road or rail traffic.
Special contractors are handling the drilling work, and they started back in March 2024. The whole project is expected to wrap up by Spring 2025.
Paul Davison, the Project Manager, shared how important this project is. He mentioned that it’s part of a national program aimed at improving water services while also protecting the environment.
He also pointed out that this drilling method helps them avoid disrupting traffic and trains, all while preserving the heritage of the railway, especially since it’s celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.
Mark Whaley, from Esh-Stantec, added that this is the second project where they’ve used this trenchless method. It really cuts down on disruptions while they make these essential improvements.
So, it looks like the new pipeline will be ready by Spring 2025, making things better for everyone in the area.
