Newcastle: Northumbrian Water is launching its biggest investment plan ever. They will spend £2.6 billion over five years starting this spring.

This investment aims to improve water and sewer services across the North East. The plan includes upgrades to pipelines, treatment works, and pumping stations. It’s expected to create 3,000 jobs each year in the region.

Water UK announced that average water bills in England and Wales will rise by £123 from April. This increase means households will pay about £10 more each month.

However, Northumbrian Water customers will see a smaller increase. Their bills will rise by £79 a year, which is about £6 a month. This keeps North East bills among the lowest in the country.

From April 2025, customers will pay an average of £1.39 per day for water services. This totals around £507 a year for the average household in the North East.

Northumbrian Water promises that the extra money will only fund local improvements. They plan to spend 60p of every pound with local suppliers to support the regional economy.

Mark Wilkinson, head of Affordability Support, emphasized the importance of reliable service. He mentioned the need for clean and safe tap water while protecting the environment.

Wilkinson also acknowledged that bill increases can be concerning. The company offers various support options, including payment plans and discounts for low-income customers.

Last year, they helped over 100,000 customers with financial support. Their website has resources for customers to find help with bills and check eligibility for support schemes.

As part of the investment, a £2.2 million project will enhance a service reservoir in Fenham. This project will ensure safety and protect water supplies for Newcastle customers.

In Gateshead, a £3.6 million program is renewing water mains in Felling and Pelaw. This work will improve the local network and water quality.

Additionally, £56 million is being invested in a new reservoir and water mains at Springwell Village. This will benefit over 250,000 customers for the next century.

In County Durham, Project Pipeline is a £155 million investment to improve water supplies for 200,000 customers. It will replace old pipelines, some over a century old.

In Northumberland, upgrades are happening at sewage treatment works in Hexham, Felton, and Bellingham. These projects aim to protect watercourses and prepare for future challenges.
