Newcastle: Northumbria Police had a busy holiday season, handling around 2,000 emergency calls. Their team really stepped up, answering calls five times faster than usual.

On average, they picked up 999 calls in just two to three seconds, which is way below the 10-second target. Plus, they’ve made it easier for folks to report crimes through social media messaging.

Rachel Walters, the Head of Communications, praised her team for their hard work. She mentioned how crucial it is to be there for the community during busy times like Christmas and New Year.

Walters also thanked the public for being mindful about calling 999, as unnecessary calls can take away from helping those in real need. They’ve expanded online reporting options, so people can now message them directly or use the chat feature on their website.

For those who prefer the phone, they still have the 101 number available. And remember, in an emergency, always call 999.
