Northumbria PCC Susan Dungworth welcomes £100m funding for local policing efforts
Newcastle: Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth, is excited. The government announced an extra £100 million for neighbourhood policing. This funding aims to improve safety in local communities.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper shared the news this morning. The goal is to get more police officers on the streets. Northumbria Police’s total funding is now £421.1 million, a 7% increase.
The government wants to enhance its Safer Streets mission. They plan to add 13,000 police personnel to communities. Dungworth believes this funding will help make streets safer and communities stronger.
She noted that years of budget cuts can’t be fixed overnight. However, this funding shows that concerns are being heard. Dungworth looks forward to working with the Chief Constable on how to use this money effectively.
She emphasized that while this is a good start, funding is still tight. Police budgets rely on local taxes, but this boost allows for more resources. Dungworth is committed to ensuring the police force remains efficient and effective.
