Northumberland: The leader of Northumberland County Council is really happy with how the council staff handled the first snowfall of the year. It was a big deal, with heavy snow hitting the North East over the weekend.

They even had an amber weather warning from the Met Office. Because of the snow, some schools had to stay closed, which delayed kids coming back after the Christmas break.

The western part of the county got hit the hardest, with reports of up to five inches of snow in some spots. The council’s winter services team has been working non-stop to clear the roads and spread grit.

Glen Sanderson, the council leader, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he’s really proud of the team’s efforts. He mentioned they have about 100 staff dedicated to this job, and they’ve been doing a fantastic job.

He also pointed out that their investment in weather stations has been super helpful. It helps them use salt wisely, which is great. Sanderson said the council has really stepped up to meet the needs of residents and drivers in Northumberland.

He noted that the snow spread pretty wide, so the staff had to put in some serious shifts to keep everyone safe. He’s proud of the great team they have.

Northumberland has its charm, but those rural roads can be a bit tricky in winter. Thankfully, the county council has been up to the challenge.

They have a fleet of 28 vehicles ready to tackle winter weather, with spreaders and ploughs on 4x4s positioned around the county to reach those hard-to-get-to areas.

On top of that, they’ve set up community spaces across Northumberland as “warm hubs” for residents who might be struggling to heat their homes.

Sanderson expressed pride in the work they’re doing with these warm spaces, highlighting the heavy investment in that service.

He also gave a shout-out to all the staff, volunteers, and organizations helping out. It’s so important for people feeling cold to have a warm place to go.
