North Shields: A care home called Collingwood Court just got a “requires improvement” rating from the Care Quality Commission. This came after some concerns were raised during an inspection.

The inspection happened on August 13, and it turns out they need to step up their game in safety and leadership. A new manager has been trying to make things better, but they still need to work on keeping better records and using staff more effectively to ensure residents are safe.

Collingwood Court is home to up to 63 older folks, including those with dementia. Care UK runs the place, and their regional director mentioned they’re already on it, working to fix the issues found.

The CQC noted that they started looking into the care home after receiving some concerning information. They checked everything from safety to how well the place is managed. There have been two changes in management since the last inspection.

Currently, there’s a new manager who’s trying to make improvements, including some refurbishments. People, their families, and staff have said nice things about the manager and the changes happening.

However, the inspectors found that more work is needed on some systems and records to ensure everyone gets safe and personalized care. They found two legal breaches related to safety and record-keeping.

Even with the “requires improvement” rating, Collingwood Court did get a “good” mark for being effective, caring, and responsive. Families have shared positive feedback about the care their loved ones receive.

People and their relatives praised the support staff, saying they’re kind and really care about the residents. Comments included how impressed they were with the staff’s skills and how they balance giving independence while being supportive.

But there are still some issues, especially with how they learn from accidents and incidents. Samantha Rogan, Care UK’s Regional Director for the North East, acknowledged that the care fell short of the high standards expected.

She emphasized that the team is working hard to support everyone and that they’re committed to making sure all processes are followed correctly moving forward.
