David Smith and 46 MPs urge major supermarkets to support UK farmers fairly
North Northumberland: MP David Smith is pushing supermarkets for fairer deals for farmers. He’s joined by 46 other MPs who share his concerns. They say unfair practices are hurting UK agriculture. Some farmers only make 1p profit from the food they produce.
Rural Labour MPs have faced challenges with farmers since the last General Election. Changes to inheritance tax relief on farmland sparked protests. Farmers are also worried about fertiliser tax and new tax rules for double-cab trucks.
In a letter to the big six supermarkets—Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons, and Lidl—the MPs pointed out that these companies made over £5 billion in profits last year. In contrast, a typical 200-acre family farm only makes about £27,300 in profit.
The letter states that farmers are struggling to survive and often rely on government support. This situation is unfair and unacceptable. Mr. Smith emphasized that supermarkets claim to support farmers, but their actions tell a different story.
He noted that farmers are essential for the UK’s food sustainability. However, they aren’t getting a fair deal. The dominance of large supermarkets undermines the hard work of farmers. It’s not right that farmers earn so little while supermarkets profit excessively.
Mr. Smith believes farmers deserve fair treatment, and consumers deserve transparency. Ian Lavery, MP for Ashington and Blyth, also signed the letter.
