Aberdeenshire: A local man has shared how rewarding it is to volunteer for a disaster relief charity. This organization aims to ensure everyone has shelter after disasters strike.

ShelterBox focuses on providing emergency shelter for those displaced by conflicts, earthquakes, and extreme weather. They depend on volunteers in Scotland to raise funds and spread the word about their mission.

Since its start 25 years ago, ShelterBox has helped over three million people in about 100 countries. With the number of displaced individuals rising, volunteers are essential for fundraising, hosting events, and sharing information online.

Kerr Fulton-Peebles, who lives in Aberdeenshire, began volunteering for ShelterBox after retiring. He enjoys giving presentations to Rotary clubs and youth groups.

“I was welcomed with open arms and have loved volunteering for this amazing charity,” he said.

He feels he’s picking up new skills that keep him active and engaged. “Meeting other ambassadors at the ShelterBox conference was a highlight. It was inspiring to connect with people from different backgrounds who share the same passion for helping others,” he added.

Jenn Sandiford, the Community Volunteer Engagement Officer for ShelterBox, mentioned, “With so much conflict and disaster globally, it’s tough to know how to help. As we enter a new year with more people displaced than ever, we’re looking for local volunteers to ensure no one is left without shelter.”

“As humanitarian needs grow worldwide, ShelterBox must expand to assist more people affected by disasters. We need passionate volunteers from Aberdeenshire to help us achieve this,” Jenn said.

Currently, ShelterBox is aiding those impacted by Cyclone Chido and conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. They’ve also recently provided emergency shelter in the Philippines after severe storms left many homeless. Besides shelter, they offer essentials like mosquito nets and solar lights. Every volunteer’s effort makes a significant difference.

Jenn praised the volunteers, saying, “They are passionate and knowledgeable. Their impact goes beyond just fundraising; it creates a ripple effect that can inspire others to get involved in humanitarian work.”
